Speaker A:

Welcome to Blind Guys Chess, where this guy, Orin O'Neill.

Speaker B:

Hello.

Speaker A:

And this guy, Jan Bloom.

Speaker C:

Hello. Talk about the A to Z of life.

Speaker B:

Well, hello, ladies and gentlemen, or as I was about to say, our little windbreakers. Welcome to episode 112 of Blind Guys Chat, which is the emergency number.

Speaker D:

Yeah, 112.

Speaker B:

And we've had a rough old time of it last weekend because we've had Storm Dara come through Ireland. Well, this one was quite vicious, wasn't it Claude?

Speaker E:

Yeah, it really was. Did you guys have it at all?

Speaker C:

No.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we had. You sent it through without any delay, so it was quite well received. So we had also coat orange, I think here we had.

Speaker B:

So we had code red and orange and it's about over 100,000 homes without electricity.

Speaker E:

Still.

Speaker B:

Still. Yeah.

Speaker D:

But anyway, you personally, I don't like wind so much because then my orientation or when I want to cross roads or especially now with those cycles, bicycles, you know their. Yeah, the E scooters, I don't like it at all.

Speaker B:

We're going to crack on because we've got a great show and most of this is going to be taken up with something that Jan and I and others have been mentioning on the podcast and in the blind community for quite some time and that is the meta Ray Ban glasses. So we have taken the opportunity of grabbing Mr. David Renstrom all the way over there in Sweden and Northern Sweden and he bought a pair of Ray Ban meta glasses last June and we thought he'd be the ideal guy to talk about.

Speaker D:

Early adapter, eh?

Speaker B:

Very early adopter. Yeah.

Speaker D:

Oh yeah, yeah.

Speaker B:

Psych capitalist. Yeah. So let's hand over and go to David and see what he thinks about the meta glasses. And he is the resident site capitalist in Sweden. Mr. David Renstrom is fresh from walking around in the freezing cold in northern Sweden. Just in case you do not know, David just won a country music award for his debut sixth album, Honey Please Don't Set My Pickup Truck on Fire. And he's speaking to us today from his land locked submarine in Germany because they don't have any water.

Speaker C:

You're mixing counters left and right.

Speaker B:

Well, that's what we're doing here in Ireland at the moment, the election.

Speaker C:

Oh really?

Speaker D:

Oh my God.

Speaker B:

David, you are extremely and unbelievably and most welcome to the podcast. You're back for the second time. And I think we have to because before we start recording you're telling me last year that you got a cold in January. You flew in January, where it was minus 27 degrees outside, but minus 19 degrees inside your house now. So what is it like today in northern Sweden?

Speaker C:

No, no, I'm sorry, it was. It wasn't minus 2019. It was. Was 19 above zero. But it was still cold.

Speaker B:

But it sounds more dramatic.

Speaker C:

Yeah, but when you have a cold and a fever, 19 is quite cold also.

Speaker B:

Well, that's true.

Speaker C:

Today it's like. I would say it's like 4 below 0 outside in like I have at least between 20 and 21 inside. So that's.

Speaker B:

So you're wearing your. When you go outside today, you're just wearing your. Your T shirt, your T sh and shorts.

Speaker C:

Yeah, yeah, for sure. But if I'm going to the trash can, for example, I will. I will just walk in my. My shorts and my T shirt. Yes.

Speaker D:

And between you and me, Oren, that is true, because I know David longer than today, but he is really this cool guy that he wears only. When I was there, I was wearing, well, three jumpers over each other, a jacket that said. And he was wearing only a T shirt. You know, it is amazing, this guy. But David, you are here with a mission or we are very curious because I came to the understanding that you were. Yeah. You like gadgets in a way that is. You like tech. That is what we knew from the previous podcast, but now. But you have adapted already one in June this year.

Speaker C:

I like gadgets and you know, you have to spend your money on something. You can't just put it in the bank. You have to invest in some things.

Speaker D:

And you are. You are drinking not only whiskey.

Speaker B:

No, he's putting a mixer.

Speaker C:

Only whiskey. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. No, no, back in June I bought the Meta smart glasses. So yeah, in the middle of June I received them. I bought these glasses to try them out because I saw them at Site City. I saw that Ryan Jones was wearing them at Site City and from. From Whisper and I got interested and we checked them out at the office. We googled them and my blind and my partially sighted colleagues, they said, can you buy them and try them out? So we know if we should buy them. So that's what I did. Yeah, so that's why I did. I bought them. And soon after that my blind colleague, he also bought a pair when I had received mine. But I was quite impressed.

Speaker B:

I was just wondering why, because I suppose our interest right now is. Or my interest at least is the fact that now be my eyes has now recently launched themselves being available on the meta classes. So go back to June. Why did you decide to purchase not knowing necessarily? Well, I don't think we knew in June that Be My Eyes were going to be made available through the Meta glasses. So why did you decide to give them a go in to purchase in June?

Speaker D:

He's a rich man, you know.

Speaker C:

Yes. No, not really rich. Not really. But Be My Eyes was not available back in June, but what was available already, I think in late March or April was the Meta AI support. So you could ask Be My Eyes like questions you could ask, tell me what you see or describe this bottle or whatever. Yeah, so the Meta AI was available from late. Yeah, in the spring and that's what Ryan told us. So that's basically why I was interested in this product. I wasn't interested in it just because I could use it as a headset. And I mean, that's a good feature too. And it's also a good feature that you can, you know, take pictures and videos with it. But Meta AI was the, you know, killer feature I wanted.

Speaker B:

What's Meta AI like compared to other AI engines?

Speaker C:

What's interesting is that Meta AI is it's the answers you get from Meta AI are generally shorter and more concise and you can ask for more details. And also when you ask Meta AI to describe what you see, it's a quick response. It's like I would say 3 or 4 seconds compared to be my eyes, it's like 8 or 10 seconds at least for me. Yeah. So it's very quick usually. But it's still only with the meta, it's still, only still images, not video. You can't have live. No service as far as I know, has live video descriptions yet. But we have seen it demonstrated from OpenAI, but it's not available.

Speaker D:

But I think technically the hardware, you know, the Meta glass will be available or will be able to do that as well, you know, because you can take videos also with this Meta glass.

Speaker C:

Yeah, yeah. And you can stream from your glasses. For example, if I connect to someone with a Messenger, Facebook messenger or a WhatsApp call, a video call, I can connect the glasses by double pressing the button on the glasses. They will see the video feed from the glasses. For example, if I'm outside the building and I need help to find the entrance or something like that, or just if I'm at home and I'm looking at something that I can figure out how to, you know, open or whatever.

Speaker B:

Give us a run through then David of the actual glasses. So as I understand, the glass that are only, only available are Ray Ban. And they're the Wayfarer type design, is that correct? And then where, where's the camera and are there physical buttons on it on the glasses and is it easy to connect, etc, etc?

Speaker C:

Yeah, actually there are. I think there are three different models available with the, with the smartness. If you say so. Even though AI features and whatever. So we have opted to use the Wayfarer because they are the most classical, the most classic model. And also some people say that they are the most good looking.

Speaker D:

Blues Brothers.

Speaker B:

Blues Brothers.

Speaker C:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, the Blues Brothers. Yeah, the Blues Brothers Brothers. That's the classic film that we have been talking about at the office. Our CEO, the CEO Michael, he got actually he has ordered a Blues Brothers poster to put up in the office to show the glasses. Yeah, we will see. There is also a model called Skyler and there is also another one which the name escapes me right now, but Wayfire is the one we have in stock. But customers can order from us if they want. Yeah, I forgot to tell you that we decided, or our CEO decided in like October, September, October that we should actually try to sell these ourselves because there aren't many distributors in Sweden for the Meta glasses. Yeah, they look like regular sunglasses. I have them on right now and it's like.

Speaker D:

Oh yeah.

Speaker C:

If you compare it. If you compare them, if you compare them to regular glasses, sunglasses, it's like the frames are a little bit thicker because they hold the electronics, I would say. Okay, but they are not. I mean if you look, if people look at you, they generally. They don't see. They don't see that they are smart glasses. They just see glasses.

Speaker D:

Where are the cameras then?

Speaker C:

The cameras are in the corners of the frames. So I think they're called ultra wide lens so that you get a wide picture when you take photos and so on.

Speaker B:

So right now you're wearing them. Yeah, you're just wearing them right now as regular sunglasses. So the cameras aren't active, I'm assuming, and you're not exactly any information in your own ear or anything like that. They're just regular sunglasses right now until you launch the Meta app or be my eyes or whatever you want to do. Is that correct?

Speaker C:

Yeah, exactly. So right now they are, you know, they are just idle and waiting for a command. So they are connected but not working.

Speaker D:

But you have connected them with your iPhone or your smartphone. Yeah, and then. But do you need to have the app up and running to use the Mataglia or can you have your phone idle in your pocket or in whatever on Your desk, and then you can. Can initiate a command from the glass or with your voice.

Speaker C:

I can have. I can certainly put my. My phone away as long as it. It is within. Within range. So. So it's like, you know, the regular Bluetooth range, so it's like 10 meters. As long as the phone is quite close by. I can, I can just issue the voice. The voice command and I can do stuff. So the phone doesn't need to be unlocked. It doesn't need to be you in my. Close to me. It can be in the other room as long as it's within range. But you need to install the app, the metaview app, and you need to pair the glasses with the phone to get the functionality. You could use the glasses without the app, but then you don't get any other features than basically the headset. You can use them for calls and so on, but then they work just as a regular headset. You don't have any voice commands.

Speaker B:

So that's interesting. You just said you can use them for regular calls and that. So you can answer a phone call, an incoming phone call, or make an outgoing phone call just with your phone in your pocket and just using the glasses.

Speaker C:

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker B:

Correct.

Speaker C:

Exactly. Exactly. I can say a voice command and call someone. I don't need to get my phone out.

Speaker D:

How do you pick up a call? Is it also with a command or do you need.

Speaker C:

Yeah, I can use a command, but I prefer to. There is. I said before that there is a physical button on top of the left. Sorry, the right. The right frame. In. In almost close to the front, there is a button which I can press once to take a photo and I can hold it for a couple of seconds and it will record a video. But there is also a small touch area on the right side of the frame and I can tap it once, twice, or three times. Or I can swipe back and forth and when I double tap, I can answer or end a call. If I swipe forward, I can increase the volume and if I swipe backwards, I can decrease the volume.

Speaker B:

Oh, wow, that's cool.

Speaker D:

Imagine when we are walking out with the dog, you know, and then Claudia is calling you or Chantal. There's no excuse anymore to hang up or to dance.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I'm not going to get these glasses.

Speaker C:

No, me neither.

Speaker D:

Know, this is really. This is a. This is a. This is a drawback. My God. I have to.

Speaker B:

Yeah, we're now on the cons section of these.

Speaker D:

Yeah, exactly, exactly. Come on. Heads free. Completely.

Speaker B:

Well, tell, tell Us. David, you're just saying about the voiceover and I, I think I found this as well with my AirPods is if you're out and about and you try and, you know, answer a call or say something to Siri to do something on the phone with. With my AirPods, if it's particularly noisy, you know, the AirPods don't give the command to the phone because it's picking up all this background noise. Have you found any issues with the voice commands or giving voice commands to the phone when you are out and about?

Speaker C:

Yeah, I have to say we have used, for example, in very noisy exhibition environments when, you know, people are talking everywhere and still they seem to often it works. It's like they pick up the trigger word so they hear what you're saying. And I should say the microphones are very good at these glasses. I mean, there are actually five microphones picking up the sound around you. Yeah, five. So you can record very, yeah, you know, you can record very exact sound from. You can hear the sound coming from the left, from the right in front of you, behind you, above you. It's like so, so, so when you record a video, for example, you get a very good sound recording.

Speaker D:

David, I see an option also for, you know, this technique, what we have. I forgot the name of the lady, you know, our young star. What was his.

Speaker B:

Oh, more and more. More and more.

Speaker D:

Yeah, more. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know when you look on the left side to see if a bicycle is coming, you know, you, you even hear it, you know, more, more.

Speaker B:

McEwen was on with us and she's a young lady who has developed an app and it will detect whether the traffic, you know, at the traffic lights, if there is a car coming towards your left or your right hand side, because she had a bad experience when she was much. So I wonder, is that something that could be incorporated within these glasses in the future?

Speaker C:

I guess technically it's possible because you have the directional mics in different directions. So I can see why it shouldn't be possible.

Speaker D:

And the camera.

Speaker B:

And the camera, of course.

Speaker C:

And the camera also. Yeah.

Speaker B:

But I just want to ask you about the apps. What are you using the glasses for at the moment? On a day to day basis.

Speaker C:

I should say what I've been using them for mainly is just as a headset for, you know, listening to voiceover when I, when I use the phone outside, you know, you know, among people. So they don't, they don't hear everything I do. The speakers are very, I would say very Directional. So the sound is actually coming from the frames a little bit in front of my ears. And the sound is very directed to your ears in front of the ears. So people around you, generally, they don't hear a lot what you hear because the sound is so limited to your ears. So of course, if I put the sound on max volume, then people will hear some leakage from the audio. But otherwise, generally they don't hear a lot.

Speaker E:

Jen Renscrum now we hear it now.

Speaker C:

We hear it now. You could hear the glasses speaking. My mother was calling, so maybe I will get another call soon because I didn't answer. We will see what happens.

Speaker D:

What do we do on Sunday morning? You're not free.

Speaker C:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker B:

Well, David, can I ask you, do you kind of feel a bit silly if you're out and about and you're. You're talking to somebody on the phone using the glasses and do you have the, do you. Are you conscious that people are going, what's that? Who's that guy talking to? Because he's not holding a phone up to his ear.

Speaker F:

Is he?

Speaker B:

Is he, Is he all right?

Speaker F:

Is he?

Speaker C:

No, I think, I think, I think most people are used to people talking to themselves. I mean, it's like when I have the air. When I have the AirPods, for example. I mean, the AirPods are not very visible if you don't. I mean, I usually have air. One AirPod in one ear. So if someone is standing on my other side, they don't see it. So I mean, it happens quite often that you Talk on the AirPods. I usually make a point of turning away so they don't think I talk to them if I can.

Speaker D:

In the pre recording, we were talking about the different glasses available had the sunglass or the.

Speaker B:

You were talking about the fact that you. Your glasses are change. Well, not color, but they go clear. The ones you have are go clear when you're indoors, but darker when you're outdoors. Is that correct?

Speaker C:

Yeah, not mine glasses, but because I don't need them because I don't have any sight left. But others can use it. They are these photochromatic glasses you can put in the frames and then they become dark when UV light hits them and they become clear when you go inside. But that's only for people with sight left.

Speaker D:

Oh, that is a side capitalist.

Speaker C:

Yeah, that's for the side capitalists.

Speaker D:

That's a side. Now we're getting to explain also, is it comfortable or are they heavy? Heavy?

Speaker C:

They are not heavy. They are not heavy. I would Say they are very light. They are not heavy. It's not like you put on a gaming headset and you feel the weight. I mean, it's like, it's very light. And it's amazing how much electronics they can put into these frames because they are not very thick. And it's like they have battery, they have memory cameras, microphones. I don't understand how they do it. It's like.

Speaker D:

But why do you need to have the internal memory then, David?

Speaker C:

Yeah, when I take a picture, for example, if I press the button here, the only real physical button on the frames I press, it takes a picture. It takes a picture. And that picture is stored in the memory of the glasses. You have 32 gigabytes of memory. And if I hold the button for a couple of seconds, it will record a video and that will also be stored in the memory of the glasses. And these pictures and videos, they are transferred to the phone either when you press Import in the Metaview app or when you. Yeah, basically when you put the glasses in the. In the case, because the case is also Power Bank. So they will charge when you put the glasses in the case and then they will automatically transfer to the phone if you have WI fi set up at home. So the glasses are connected to the WI fi. Yeah.

Speaker B:

So just talk about Be My Eyes then, for the moment, or using the Envision app or Seeing AI. Have you. Have you used any of those? Using the glasses?

Speaker C:

Be My Eyes is still not. I haven't been able to use them with the glasses. They are rolling it out. And when I ask Meta for Be My Eyes, it says I can't do that right now. So I'm not. It's not available for me right now.

Speaker B:

I just think when David eventually gets Be My Eyes are going in Sweden, it'll just be Snow. Snow.

Speaker C:

Yeah, exactly, exactly. But the thing is, they only support Be My Eyes the call a volunteer feature. So I'm not able to use the AI version of Be My Eyes on the Glasses yet. We have marketed the Envision glasses here in Sweden, but it's a hard sell. I mean, it's. They are very expensive. It's like four times, sorry, 10 times the price of the Ray Ban Meta glasses. And I mean, it's very expensive. They're very expensive.

Speaker D:

But the comfortability of the glasses, what is that better or different? What is the difference?

Speaker C:

Yeah, Vision glasses. They have. They are not very comfortable. I mean, they have. And they also. You look kind of strange when you put them on, according to me at least. And Some of my colleagues, you have, you don't. They don't look like cool, sleek, you know, sunglasses. They look like you have some kind of frames with a big slab of plastic on the right side of your head. Like they're not very good looking. No. Yeah. You know, they are built on the old Google Glass platform, so. Which Google has discontinued. So I'm not sure how Envision solves that problem because they're not making them anymore. Google is not making the frames anymore.

Speaker B:

But how long, just practically, how long? If you put, if you're using the glasses, what's the battery life like?

Speaker C:

Between four and six hours. Usually I get on one charge and then I put them in the case for a while and then I get another four to six hours. So. And you can charge them up to eight times. At least eight times if you. The case is fully charged. So. Yeah.

Speaker B:

So you could get a full day out of, out of the glasses if you wanted.

Speaker C:

Yeah, if I want. I guess I could. Guess I could get a full week with a case. So after a week I need to charge them. But it always depends on, I mean, how much you use them. If I'm on a call like now I'm not using the glasses for the call right now because I wanted the glasses to be. Not connected to the call if I wanted to show something. Yeah, but if I had the glasses on the call, then obviously it takes a lot of battery. It drains the battery faster. And of course, if you're recording video, the battery drains quite quickly. So, yeah, it always depends. I mean, I was able to use the glasses for eight hours in one day this summer, but then I didn't really use them a lot. I had them on and connected to the phone, but I just used voiceover a little bit. I maybe took quite some pictures, you know, a few pictures and yeah, so on. So I could use them without the case. I think I left the case at home at that point.

Speaker D:

If you are, for example, in, in the kitchen and you want to describe a bottle or something, how do you do that? What, what is your sequence then? What, what are the steps you. You have to do?

Speaker C:

I will actually go into the kitchen right now, take a crib, take out the. I will take out the container. Yeah, yeah. I will take out the container from the fridge and I'm holding it in front of me in front of the glasses.

Speaker B:

Take out that container, David. That's something. No, that one. Out. No.

Speaker D:

This is embarrassing.

Speaker C:

This is Swedish specialty. We have the perfect. Oh, my God. He meta. Tell me what you see?

Speaker A:

I see a white bottle with green labeling, possibly containing supplements or vitamins.

Speaker C:

So I will rotate and try again. Hey Meta, tell me what you see.

Speaker A:

I see a person holding a carton of milk. There is also an open cabinet with various items in the background.

Speaker C:

Okay. Milky. That's right. Hey Meta, tell me what you see.

Speaker A:

I see a person holding up an aluminum can of Coca Cola. There appears to be white walls and possibly some posters or stickers in the background.

Speaker C:

Hey, Meta, what kind of drink am I looking at?

Speaker A:

You are looking at a can of Coca Cola.

Speaker C:

Hey Mera, look and tell me what you see.

Speaker A:

I see a package of cheese, possibly cheddar or mozzarella. It's in front of what appears to be a kitchen countertop with various items.

Speaker C:

Hey Meta. Hey Meta, tell me what this is.

Speaker A:

This is a bag of Texas Mex cheese.

Speaker D:

That's decent. And you have a female voice. You can have different voices as well.

Speaker C:

No, it's not my.

Speaker D:

Oh, this is.

Speaker C:

No, it's like. No, actually they have added quite a few new voices. I. My colleague, he set the current voice to Judi Dench. So they are different voices available.

Speaker B:

Do you find yourself using the glasses even in your house more than you would have if you just had the phone?

Speaker C:

I wouldn't say that I use them more than I used be my eyes before. Maybe a little bit. Just a little bit. But the main advantage is that you are hands free. You don't have to hold up your phone and, you know, direct the camera correctly. I mean, in this case I just have to look into the general direction of what I want to have described and ask the question. So the main advantage is, like I said before, when you can connect, you can connect the glasses to a Facebook messenger, a WhatsApp call, and the stream from the glasses. I mean, it's like you have hands free. You can. You have maybe a cane or you have a guide dog or you have a bag or whatever in your underhand. So. So your hands are full. You don't have. You need a third hand for the camera for, for the phone. So. So that's the main advice. Yeah, that you. You are hands free.

Speaker D:

Well, many thanks, David, for your extensive, yeah. Explanation and. And your. Yeah. User feedback because, yeah, yeah, you're. Yeah. Quite helpful. I think I am tempted to have one myself, to be honest.

Speaker C:

I should say that the app. The app Metaview is very accessible. It's very well done. The only languages supported right now is they are Italian, English, of course, and French. And I should maybe Explain that. The main reason why they support Italian, which is not, I mean it's quite a big language but it's not as big as others like Spanish. But the main reason is that Ray Ban is Italian, so it's owned by Italians.

Speaker B:

Well, listen David, thanks very much for the run through and the demo and your views on it. That's brilliant because I think we've got a better understanding of what these glasses do and how useful are not depending on what, what way you live they can be. I certainly think they're probably worth more investigation from my side anyway, the Envision glasses for me, regardless of. And thank you for your feedback, David. Regardless of what they look like, they are far too expensive for people who are blind or visually impaired. And I don't know how they're selling any of them. And I think this is a good, this is a good way of getting in the door at okay for €400 might be a lot of money for some people and it is a lot of money. But when you compare it to something like the Envision glasses, which is in the thousands, it really is, I think a more affordable way to look at these kind of glasses. And don't forget, I suppose because we're not just talking about meta AI or be my eyes or envision or seeing AI, but I'm really, I'm confident there will be more apps that are coming on that will come on stream and take advantage of these type of glasses. Well, thanks so much, David.

Speaker D:

Super.

Speaker B:

Now you need to go and call your mother.

Speaker C:

Yes.

Speaker B:

She probably thinks you're dead in a ditch right now because you didn't answer the phone the first time.

Speaker C:

Exactly, exactly.

Speaker D:

Thank you very much, David.

Speaker C:

You always do. Thank you.

Speaker B:

I think that's a good indication of for hopefully for us and for other listeners if they might want to go and purchase metal glasses. Now I do have to kind of put a little bit of a disclaimer since.

Speaker D:

Disclaimer.

Speaker B:

A little bit of a disclaimer or as the politicians say here, a health warning that David was talking about the VPN and meta AI and I'm kind of only specifically. Well, I'm specifically talking about Ireland but it is kind of towards within Europe and Jan is going to talk a little bit about this in a second but just about the virtual private network. As far as I know they're the abbreviations, I think. So the story in Ireland certainly seems to be at the moment that meta AI you can use part of the meta AI on these glasses, but only in the multifunction Sense, which is to say you can call people or send a WhatsApp or do things that are functional to the phone, but you cannot at the moment in Ireland and in most of Europe, if not all of Europe, use the Meta AI to say, hey Meta, tell me what's in front of me. And that is because of European law, the EU law somebody wrote in an article that I was reading on the Internet just before we started recording. Reporting is extremely vague in terms of how, what, what the law means in terms of GDPR and that. So Meta have made a decision and I'm not saying this is they've made the decision forever, but they've certainly made the decision at the moment from. And this is an article I was reading on the 18th of November, so it's quite recent. They have made the decision not to introduce Meta AI in Europe because of this European law that is so vague because they don't know if you, if they allow it to be accessible in. On the meta classes in Europe, are they likely to be sued? Are they breaching the law?

Speaker D:

So that's why European Community is a little bit more hesitant or they want to put more restrictions on these controls on these tech companies instead of Mr. Trump, you know, he is embracing all the tech companies and, and give them the free world. But yeah, I think it is somehow good to have some restrictions come on.

Speaker B:

So this is why you, you most likely, if you do buy the Meta glasses, you will most likely need to sign up to a VPN service. I'm going to put some links in the, in the show notes. One is, one is called Express, one is called vpn, one is called Surfshark vpn. And now I'm going to hand over to Jan because he has news since we recorded that segment with David and you went off and you were a ball boy and you got something for Christmas.

Speaker D:

Yeah, well, we have in the Netherlands we have Sinterklaas. You know, we, we explained that I think in previous episodes. So you know, his 5th of December. Yeah, yeah. This bishop from Spain is coming then over, you know, to the Netherlands with his steam ship etc, you know, so the, and now he arrived, arrived finally it was a nice event and he had even, you know, a present for me and that was so I could unbox my Meta glass this year. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker E:

And, and which ones did you get that?

Speaker D:

Well, which one? I have the Ma Raven. The Wayfarer.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And I've.

Speaker E:

Are they black?

Speaker D:

No, they are not black. They are the coloring ones. So they, so they color black. When they, when they are put UV on it.

Speaker B:

You got the, you got the graduated ones, did you? So they're clear inside, are they?

Speaker E:

When you're inside, they're reactive lenses. So they react to the lights.

Speaker D:

Yes, it is somehow I have also the, the small size. So you have the 50 and the 53. Yeah, and I got the. The 50 or. Yeah.

Speaker C:

And.

Speaker D:

And did they fit very nice. I must. I really got a positive comment from Rosalie. She said, oh, cute. You're looking cute and cool, you know, so. Okay. Yeah, Yeah. I think she wants something from me, to be honest. The casing is also very nice. The, the pairing. And you need to install the metaview app. That is. And then everything. Well, it's quite easy. What I like about also is that the audio streaming that is really when, when. So you don't need to put in earbuds in your ear or to cover something. It is extremely. Yeah, welcome. It is easy going. You don't disturb your neighbors in a way. Although I must admit yesterday on the table dining table, I was wearing my glass. So that's already something. While having food. That's a little bit awkward, you know, And I. And I. I was listening to the news and then I know. Well, I'm always the guy who is upset when people are using their mobile at the table, you know. And now.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And I was trying to be sneaky. I was trying to be sneaky. And then Chantal was watching Ticho. He said he was pointing at me. Yep, Daddy is doing.

Speaker C:

You know, and.

Speaker D:

And Rosie saw it as well. So they were laughing out light. And then. Yum. No, no, no. I don't know. I wanted to protect that I was doing.

Speaker E:

So people can't hear it at all.

Speaker D:

They hear it a little bit. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker E:

Okay.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

So. So that was quite. It was funny. It was really. So I was really backfired now, you know, so I was really. Okay. So I had to pulled off the glasses so I could not use them anymore. So I was part of the family again. But it is connected To Spotify, to WhatsApp, to. To. To Facebook. I did not do with Facebook yet. But With Spotify and WhatsApp you can then say, hey, Meta. Have what. What you heard David doing. Hey, meta. And then David was doing the AI. But then I say write a message on WhatsApp to blind guys chat now. And then you can. Okay. And then you speak then the message. And then do you want to send this? Okay. And then. Yes. So that's. And then also when I'm out and about yesterday. I took it also for my walk to the shop. You are still able to hear the outside world I had to participate in on the street and to hear the cars and to hear the ticking sound of the, of the, of the traffic light, etc. And you hear the chef, etc. So. And you can still listen to music or to listen, hey, there is a WhatsApp message coming. And then you can. Because I instructed not to read out loud all the time the incoming WhatsApp messages. But then you can say, hey, meta, read it and then it will read then that message if you want.

Speaker B:

So if you do have meta classes and you are using an accessible and cost effective VPN to access meta AI, would you please send us in the details and we can send that on to not only ourselves, because I believe Santa might be bringing me a pair of meta, but we can also when.

Speaker D:

You'Re good or bad, you know. Yeah.

Speaker E:

You can hear them here.

Speaker D:

Can you?

Speaker B:

Anyway, we have emails. Do you want your. Do you want your theme tune or not? You want.

Speaker E:

Yeah, I always. I always want my theme tune.

Speaker B:

Well, I thought you didn't like this tune, but anyway.

Speaker E:

No, I don't, but it still makes me laugh, though.

Speaker B:

Time.

Speaker D:

And, and I was saying that the stereo effect on these meta glasses is extremely good, I must say. Yeah.

Speaker C:

Yes. Yeah.

Speaker E:

Spatial.

Speaker D:

It's amazing.

Speaker E:

Okay. Yeah. Well, we got a lovely email from Gordon Anthony, one of our favorite.

Speaker D:

I was wondering if you're going to.

Speaker E:

Do it this time. And he says. Hi, guys. As requested, here's a brief weather. The weather report from Scotland. Now, this predates Storm Darragh, but anyway, I expect we'll have had another storm by the time you get this. Yes, we did. And you may want to edit out the sarcastic political comment at the end of the clip. It's up to you, so.

Speaker B:

Good lord, no, no.

Speaker D:

Oh, no, no, never. And we need to ask, how is Dundee United doing?

Speaker E:

You know, hopefully he'll tell us in his message. Yeah, Orin, do you want to roll it there?

Speaker B:

Yeah, sure. Yeah.

Speaker D:

Hello by Guy.

Speaker F:

Guys, it's Blind with a weather report, as requested. First of all, though, glad to hear that you're fully recovered, Oren, and also very glad to hear you back on the show. I've been enjoying it, thank you very much. Anyway, storm belt. Yes, we did catch some of it, although we were quite lucky here in central Scotland. We had some snow on the Saturday. Snow, only 2 or 3 centimeters, so not desperate. The timing of it meant that a lot of the roads Were very, very slippery and it was quite dangerous going out, so we stayed indoors. There were quite a few road accidents we heard, especially on the motorways where long delays were caused by his merit accidents and prevented some people who were gamely trying to get to football matches on the Saturday indoors and listened to it on the radio. Sunday the snow had all gone. I think there had been some rain overnight after trace of snow left. But then we had two days of very, very strong winds with too many whiskies blown around. So we were quite lucky really. Further north in Scotland though, it was quite a bit worse. There were power cuts. There was also schools closed and road blocked and quite a bit of transport disruption. That would be up around in Burness, away in the north and south east. They certainly seemed to catch the water, but we were quite lucky. So that was it. But our weather since then has been bizarre. We had some very, very cold nights, very cold days and then a couple of days of that and then all of a sudden you get a jump of about 10, 12 degrees and the temperature and it's like a nice autumn day. It's very, very strange. But never mind. Donald Trump says climate change doesn't exist.

Speaker D:

So.

Speaker F:

Anyway, that's enough from me. I'll speak again soon. Cheers.

Speaker E:

Yay. I love his voice.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, he's so good. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But we need to know how Dundee.

Speaker B:

Sorry, Gordon has met at glasses or he has Bose frames. Maybe it are Bose frames.

Speaker E:

Maybe he could let us know.

Speaker B:

Hello our favourite sight capitalists, and welcome to episode 112 of BGC. We are honoured to be joined by Mr David Renstrom who has kindly agreed to leave the comfort of his North Swedish igloo to chat about the newest craze everyone is talking about: Meta Smart Glasses! David takes us through the design and functions of the glasses, and even gives us a tour of his fridge. Are these the Christmas present you've been waiting for? Do you need to amend your letter to Santa? Stay tuned and find out.

We do have to issue a health warning and say that the A.I. part of 'Meta Glasses' may not work in your location straight out of the box. This is mainly an issue in Europe and is due to very strict EU data protection laws. However, there is a workaround: You can subscribe to a VPN service which means you can tell the 'Meta View App' your location is in the USA or Canada and then the A.I. will work fine. See links below to VPN services, some of which have very good subscription offers for the next few weeks.

It turns out that in between shows, Jan has also purchased these Meta glasses and is getting some "Looking cute and cool dad" comments from his daughter Rosalie. But is she trying to butter him up for a special request that only daughters can ask their dad!?! Sucker!!!

We've got an email from Blind Gordon which Mohamed will be pleased about as he was very worried about the weather in Scotland. We are delighted to say Gordon is all good, but we'd suggest staying away from Inverness; as it's feckin' FREEZIN' there!!

And now, for the most important bit: Would you like to be a contestant in the Annual BGC Christmas Quiz? It's on December 23rd and will be lots of fun – full of madness and mayhem! We may even have some special guests. Send us an email expressing your interest to [email protected]. Even if you just want to attend, and not take part in the quiz – let us know, and we’ll send you on the joining details.

So, stick your shades on; strip down to your Christmas reindeer socks; pour yourself a glass of eggnog (yuck!) and settle in to listen to the number 1 podcast as rated by Christmas films: Blind Guys Chat - 7 out of 8 Reindeers prefer it to falling off the roof!
